What is the 2022 Coastrek Margaret River route like? How much sand is there?

It doesn’t get more wild than this! The Cape to Cape features spectacular coastal and forest scenery, a fascinating geology of cliffs, caves, headlands and rock formations and an ever-changing display of vegetation and wildflowers.

The 35km route begins at the former major timber port, Hamelin Bay, now famous for it’s abundance of stingrays searching for food around the old jetty pylons.

Start your journey with 6.5km on the glorious sand of Neretlis and Boranup Beach. Depart the beach and enter the stunning Boranup Forest. Recently damaged in a fire, the forest is showing promising signs of regrowth! You’ll follow the fairly flat Cape to Cape walk Track through the Boranup Forest to Conto Campground.

The section of The Cape to Cape Walk Track between Conto and Redgate will be a fun challenge for all! You’ll hop, skip and jump through some beautiful interesting terrain. Be sure to go slow and steady, but always remember to stop a take a look around once and a while!

In the last 10km, there is plenty of amazing sand walking, you’ll pass through the only café in the area in Gnarabup and finish in Prevelly, home of Margaret River itself and legendary Surfers Point which hosts the famous Margaret River Pro.

Route tips! 

• The water in this area is NOT potable, please fill up your water bottle EVERY TIME you see an event water tank or water drum.
• Phone reception can be intermittent, so please keep your team together and ensure your team mates are on different telecom networks.
• There are limited existing toilet stops on this section of The Cape to Cape Track. There will be plenty of porta-loos and places for a bush wee!
• We highly recommend ankle gaiters and sand resistant shoes to keep out sand and debris.
• Make sure you read the Soft Sand Success e-book in the ‘Resources’ section on your dashboard and incorporate sand walking into your training.

SUPPORT CREW

Parts of the route are very remote with the first 21km inaccessible by support crews. 

We will be supporting all teams at 3 stops within this first 21km where trekkers will have access to the following:

• KISS Stop (8.8km): Toilets, Water and First Aid
• KISS Stop (14km): Toilets, Water and First Aid
• LUV Stop (21km): Toilets, Water, First Aid, Podiatry, Physio and Snacks

After that, your support crew are welcome to meet you anywhere along the route. We will have designated stops as follows and they are welcome to meet you here as well:

• LUV STOP – Redgate (28km mark) - parking for support crew at this stop
• KISS STOP - Gas Bay (31.5km mark) - parking for support crew at this stop

LEAVING THE TREK EARLY

Details:

• Cost is approx. $30 to $40 per trekker (from pick up point to the finish line)
• Payment to be made directly to the driver

Please note:  All Coastrek routes are subject to change. We attempt, at all times, to adhere to the advised route. As we are immersed in nature, however, there may sometimes be circumstances beyond our control (tides, fallen trees/branches, other safety aspects as advised by local councils) that require us to slightly alter the route. In any such cases these will be clearly marked and identified on event day.

If there is a government directive that disrupts your proposed Coastrek route on Event Day, you will get to choose your own route, based on your local area, COVID cluster conditions and suggestions from us, with all the support and assistance you need. We will give you some inspiration by suggesting routes we know and love in your area.
