The 2023 Coastrek Sydney route is a stunning stretch of coastline offering amazing views, picturesque rocky headlands, the golden sands of Sydney’s beaches and fabulous trails in nature.
In 2023 we are BACK walking along Sydney's Northern Beaches. During your Coastrek you'll be walking from Palm Beach (60km) taking in Barrenjoey Headland, Sydney’s northernmost seaside point where you may even do some whale watching! Then you’ll follow the coast through Newport (45km start) and North Narrabeen (30km start) to Balgowlah Heights, where you’ll see Sydney’s famous Harbour including views of the North and South Heads.
60km Route
Starting from the iconic Palm Beach, our super 60km trekkers will begin their challenge heading north (yep, you heard right!). Look up to the lighthouse… that is where you’re headed! Race the sunrise and enjoy the spectacular 360 views of the peninsula.
After the Barrenjoey lighthouse loop, return to Palm Beach and head south along the beautiful Northern Beaches. The route will send you up over a headland, then down to a beach, then up over a headland and back onto the beach. Plenty of sand walking, which is our favourite! You’ll be grateful for your soft sand training! Then get some LURVE at the Newport Luv Stop.
45km Route
The 45km route begins at Newport Beach. You will have a touch of street walking before heading back onto the glorious coast for some more beach and bush walking. We highly recommend ankle gaiters and sand resistant shoes to keep out sand and debris. As you approach North Narrabeen you will be rewarded with a chance to refuel and hydrate at the North Narrabeen Luv Stop and the start of the 30km Event. Woohoo!
Shortly after the Luv Stop, the 60km & 45km events will depart Narrabeen beach to enjoy a serene, calming, and flat (don’t forget flat!) loop of the Narrabeen lagoon, before returning to Narrabeen beach to continue south along the coast.
30km event
The 30km route begins at North Narrabeen Beach. Strut on past the Narrabeen Lagoon loop, the 30km event will skip this section. From Long Reef to Balgowlah is mostly footpath/trail and with only a spot of sand at Dee Why, Curl Curl and Freshwater. This section includes the beautiful North Head! Take in the views but also be mindful of the flat but pebbly trails, they may cause a trip hazard.
Wind your way along the infamous Spit to Manly (but in reverse) and Dobroyd Head with magnificent views across Sydney Harbour. Make the short climb up to Tania Park and Woohoo! You did it!
There are plenty of Surf Life Saving Clubs along the route, which means many opportunities for toilets, water and icy poles!
20km event
The 20km route begins at Long Reef Beach. From here, walk along the beach to Dee Why, then along the headland trail to Curl Curl. Enjoy the view! Then, trek along the beautiful beach from North Curl Curl to South Curl Curl. You’ll head off the beach and follow the amazing boardwalk to Freshwater Beach which will take you to the famous Manly Beach. From here it is all walking pathways or trails, exploring North Head then following the Manly to Spit walk until you reach the stunning finish village at Tania Park, Balgowlah Heights.
Please note: All Coastrek routes are subject to change. We attempt, at all times, to adhere to the advised route. As we are immersed in nature, however, there may sometimes be circumstances beyond our control (tides, fallen trees/branches, other safety aspects as advised by local councils) that require us to slightly alter the route. In any such cases these will be clearly marked and identified on event day.
