Melbourne Coastrek route details:
All trails are undulating, with a fairly even split of footpath and sandy trails. We recommend gaiters and sand resistant shoes to keep out sand.
The 60k route includes about 15km of sandy beaches/trail mostly between Fingal and St Andrews. The 30k event route has approx 7km of soft sand split across three sections.
The route is peppered with short stair sets but there’s a biggie for everybody just after Fort Nepean near the end, so don’t forget to giggle as you go up.
The final hike to the Quarantine Station finish line gets very dark after the stunning sunset of Point Nepean, so have your head torch handy!
There are not many toilet and water stops enroute, so make sure you use these when you see them.
The delightful villages of Sorrento and Portsea are your best chance for a quick latte or lunch but don’t get distracted for too long.
Important note: The trail through Butlers Track (parallel to Defence Rd, Point Nepean) will be especially opened for Coastrek event day only so you can’t train on this section. The google map on the website shows the alternate route in blue for training purposes, and this is also downloadable on maps.me. On event day, have fun following the well-marked route.
