The Mornington Peninsula boasts some of Victoria’s most spectacular walking landscapes, including peaceful bays, wild ocean coastlines and tranquil bush.
The 60km route begins on the Two Bays walking Track (approx. 9km), before turning left and left again towards Fingal.
The next 20km follows narrow undulating trails along the coastline. Don’t forget to look LEFT every now and again, as you’ll see the rugged Bridgewater Bay, vantage points at the Bay of Islands and St Paul's Lookout providing fine coastal views! We highly recommend ankle gaiters and sand resistant shoes to keep out sand and debris.
The 60km Trek will then crossover to the Bay side of the Peninsula, to give our trekkers a taste of the Bay trail & sand walking along Sorrento front beach for approx. 1km. The 60kers will then return to the surfside via the main strip of Sorrento. This is your best chance for a quick latte or lunch but don’t get distracted for too long!
The 60km and the 30km events will meet at the Sorrento Luv Stop. Woohoo!
The first 13km of the 30km route to Sorrento Luv Stop is mostly flat with sealed road, footpath walking & bush trail. There is a total of approx. 2.3km of sand walking, including approx. 400m at Portsea front back, 600m at Shelly beach and 1.2km at Sorrento front beach. The 30km route then travels along the beautiful Tuckey Trail, which transfers the route from the bay side to the surf side of the Peninsula. The Tuckey Track takes you through a mix of paved residential streets, undulating tracks, and the Tuckey Reserve.
The 30km route and 60km route meet at the Sorrento Luv Stop. Sorrento SLSC to Point Nepean is mostly bush trail, sealed road with only a spot of sand at Portsea Surf Beach (approx. 500m).
NOTE: Portsea Surf Beach is an unpatrolled beach, with a 1.5m high tide scheduled for 12:18pm. If a stormy swell greets us on event day and when night falls, don’t worry – we have an alternative transport option available to transfer trekkers from Sorrento SLSC to Portsea SLSC…. but only for a little way … and then it’s back to trekking. ? Your safety is our number 1 priority!
Following this section, follow Farnsworth track to London Bridge, onto Butlers Track to Fort Nepean. *
Point Nepean offers some of the best views on the Mornington Peninsula across to Queenscliff and out the Port Phillip Bay Heads. Take a minute to take in the breathtaking scenery! Follow the easy-walking Coles Track to Point Nepean Quarantine Station and we have reached the finish Village, YOU DID IT!
Some important stuff:
Water and Toilets - There are very few water and toilet stops along the entire route. You must refill your water bladder EVERY TIME you see a water refill station (at the Luv Stops), even if you think you have plenty left. During training these water points will not be available, so ensure you take extra with you for training on the route.
Head torches - It may also be very dark for those finishing after sunset. Remember to bring your head torch, even if you expect to finish in daylight. They are compulsory for all trekkers.
Support Crew – In the first half of the 60km event, there are limited access points for your support crew to meet you along the way, so plan ahead!
Sand - Overall, you will be walking on approx 6km of sand for the 60km event and 3 km of sand for the 30km event.
* Important note: The trail through Butlers Track (parallel to Defence Rd, Point Nepean) will be especially opened for Coastrek event day only so you can’t train on this section. The google map on the website shows the alternate route in blue for training purposes, and this is also downloadable on maps.me. On event day, please always follow our pink markers and refer to your map.
Please note: All Coastrek routes are subject to change. We attempt, at all times, to adhere to the advised route. As we are immersed in nature, however, there may sometimes be circumstances beyond our control (tides, fallen trees/branches, other safety aspects as advised by local councils) that require us to slightly alter the route. In any such cases these will be clearly marked and identified on event day.
